Flashing Lights (Ft. Dwele) - Instrumental

Produced by: Kanye West

From: (Graduation) - (Good/Universal) - (2007)

Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights” has been out for a minute, but I just got the single (finally!) so I’m upping the Flashing Lights Instrumental. A slowed house-beat drives that so-so sweet soul loop and stuttering pads, with Connie from Sneak Sound System being sampled for the vocal hits. Dwele comes in and butters it all golden as usual and you’ve got what I think is the 2nd best joint on the album (after, of course, Can’t Tell Me Nothing)

As shit gets mad cold up in the T-Dot, I gotta keep this in rotation to remind me of those hot summer nights, and, being murdered by a busty Spanish porn star in the trunk of my car.

Slumplordz - Sunnmoonsekt [LP] [2001]

Sunnmoonsekt LP

Production by: Slumplordz (Hard Rard & Moon)

(Sunnmoonsekt) - (Stray Records) - (2001) - (Re-Issue)

Fritz the Cat: “These guys are their own genre. forget crunk. forget grime. get slump.”

This is one motherfuckin’ weird album. I first heard of these guys in Fritz The Cat’s vice column like a billion years ago, and he was jocking them hard. I finally copped the CD by accident swapping tracks with my home from Ottawa, Pierre Truedough. holla. This is the 2001 re-issue of the original 1999 LP, to be clear.

Again, and I must stress this, this is one totally insane as all shit album. The beats are intensely robotic, minimal and on the same tip as the first Viktor Vaughn album. Big snares, droning electronics, short, punchy loops and some totally fucking weird bridges with cats bugging out in the hallway..it has it all. They must smoke some serious dust in the bay.

A collective fronted mainly by MC / Producers Hard Rard and Moon, with heavy involvement of bay area MC’s Ogre and Irahk the Rigor, the Slumplordz have been around FOREVER and are still kicking on the most underground of underground tips. After 2 discs for Stray in the early 90’s (Slumplordz Present: Tha’ Yakuza in “Don’t Worry About the Kaliber” and this one: Slumplordz Present: Sunnmoonsekt, bullshit with the label and day-to-day dramas led to a 5 year hiatus from recording for the bay area crew. Returning with production work for other west-coast rappers, the crew re-appeared with “Sav City” a mixtape style album; the first to feature all members of the collective.

These guys are crazy underground, but in the best way. Sometimes you need to get blunted out and think of post-apocalyptic ninja-robot-gangsters who need to be ass-whipped in a rap battle. You just do.

WARNING: I’d say almost half of these songs are actually pretty fucking horrible, knocked by boring beats or sloppy rapping, but off the bio-polymer-chain gems Do tha’ Sunn Moon, Dethblow and the sizzurpy Area 33rd more than make up for it. Anyone down with the first Viktor Vaughn album, Vast Aire, Kool Keith, Ghislan Poirier’s stuff, the weirder end of the Neptunes / Timbaland or electronic music will feel this. People who like MIMS and The Pussycat Dolls (un-ironically) need not apply.

Dr. Huxtable’s Diagnosis: 3 Biogenetic Clones out of 5.
