ROC-C - El Captain

ROC-C - El Capitan
Produced by: Oh No
From: El Captain / Let’s Battle / Fuck You 12″ - Stones Throw (2006)
By now, you know of my Oh No rap crush. And, while it is really weird to admit crushing on a dude who’s government name is, get this, Michael Jackson (no lie), it’s beats like these, continuing his now (in my mind) classic work on The Disrupt that make it okay.
Eschewing the free-form style of his older brother Madlib, while still clearly drawing influence from him in the loping, clattering drums and dancehall sirens, Oh No is a solid, go-to guy when you need some thump in the trunk. This beat right here is so, so gully. Another classic samplejack, but, this time, with Oh No’s afrofuturistic touch. Catch that sample!
Roc-C, who you know as the guy who you thought was Lloyd Banks on “Move”, is another Stones Throw undercard rapper, who, besides sounding exactly like Lloyd Banks, got an album with crazy Oh No / Madlib / Dilla beats (see: Wildchild, Kazi) which was entertaining but ultimately forgettable (see: Wildchild, Kazi).
