Immortal Technique: Your voice is full of jealousy like ya name was StarScream…

I truly repesct an Artist that has a “sound”. Public Enemy used to, Rza has stayed his course yet managed to branch off with Bobby Digital, Timbaland, Ghostface…the list goes on. You can innovate, but an artists needs to know his medium. Technique’s got that on lock. His beats are dramatic but cold at the same time, mostly handled by his in house producer, Southpaw. They paint a backdrop that adds an emotional weight to the sometimes monotone cadence Technique uses to blast his message out.
“Peruvian Cocaine”, his first single for Uncle Howie in 2003 (featuring 8 billion other rappers), perfectly grabs that “Scarface” / “Jungle scene from Predator” vibe to highlight the real story of how drugs enter America. “Bin Laden Remix” from Green Lantern featuring the mighty Mos Def, is a stomping, New Yawk vibe that mechanically commands MC’s to spit fire. Radically different styles, but well within the same sonic world. That’s the key…
But”Internally Bleeding”, a ridiculous Domingo beat from Revolutionary Vol 2 (2004, Viper Records), perfectly exemplifies the “sound” of technique. It’s alien, stuttering, but dripping with emotion and when those huge Timpani drums build it hits the “revolutionary” button dead on. Notice how Technique doesn’t reach too far out of his sound, but still manages to paint a complete picture of what he’s thinking in the scope of an album. I defy people to find a beat that doesn’t “fit” with his image, his message and his music.
